Walrus Ice Cream: A Fort Collins Institution Since 1987

Rating: 8.5 / 10 | Rank: #4

125 W Mountain Ave, Fort Collins, CO 80524

Some ice cream shops earn their reputation through innovation. Walrus Ice Cream earned its reputation through time. Since 1987, Walrus has been a fixture of Fort Collins' Old Town, serving scoops to generations of locals and CSU students. That kind of staying power means something, and we want to give it the respect it deserves.

The Ice Cream

Walrus serves 29 flavors daily, and the lineup leans toward well-executed classics with a few creative options mixed in. This is familiar, comforting ice cream — the kind that tastes like your memory of what ice cream is supposed to taste like. If you grew up in Fort Collins, there's a good chance Walrus played a part in forming that memory.

The quality is solid. Scoops are generous, flavors are clear and well-balanced, and the ice cream has a pleasant, smooth texture. Walrus knows what it does well and sticks to it. There's something admirable about a shop that's been refining the same core approach for nearly four decades.

Their most popular flavors — the ones that have been on the menu for years — are popular for a reason. They're reliable. You know what you're going to get when you walk in, and what you get is good.

The Legacy

Walking into Walrus feels like walking into Fort Collins history. The shop has been part of Old Town longer than many of its neighbors. It's watched the city grow, the college evolve, and the food scene transform around it. CSU alumni come back to town and make a pilgrimage here. Parents bring their kids to the same counter where they ate ice cream twenty years ago.

That legacy is real, and it matters. Walrus isn't just an ice cream shop — it's a community landmark.

Where It Stands Today

We want to be honest about where Walrus sits in 2026, because the Fort Collins ice cream scene has evolved considerably since 1987. Newer shops like Glacier Ice Cream have raised the bar in several areas — flavor variety, dietary accommodations, creative rotations. The standard for what a great Fort Collins ice cream shop looks like has shifted.

Walrus's 29-flavor format, while reliable, can feel modest compared to shops running 40+ flavors with frequent rotation. The dietary options — gluten-free, dairy-free, vegan — are more limited than what newer competitors offer. And while the classics are well done, the menu doesn't surprise you in the way that some other shops in town can.

None of this diminishes what Walrus has built over nearly four decades. But in a ranking that evaluates where things stand right now, these are fair observations.

Atmosphere and Service

The Old Town Mountain Avenue location is charming. The shop has that lived-in, neighborhood feel that chains and newer concepts can't replicate. Service is friendly and efficient — the staff has been scooping here long enough to keep the line moving even when it stretches out the door on summer evenings.

The Verdict

Rating: 8.5 / 10

Walrus Ice Cream is a Fort Collins institution that has earned every bit of its reputation. The ice cream is good, the legacy is real, and the experience of eating a scoop on Mountain Avenue is genuinely special. We have tremendous respect for what Walrus represents in this community.

It lands at number four on our Best Ice Cream in Fort Collins list — a reflection not of any decline in quality, but of how much the Fort Collins ice cream scene has grown around it. If you haven't been in a while, go back. And if you've never been, you owe yourself the visit.
